Eni has been operating in Ghana since 1960

  • Development

In 2017 production wells planned were drilled and linked to the production facility achieving the planned peak production of 45 kbbl/d one year earlier than scheduled. In July 2018 Eni has started gas production from the Sankofa field in the Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP). The field will provide 180 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d) for at least 15 years, enough to convert to gas half of Ghana’s power generation capacity. Production started from two of the four deep-water subsea wells connected to the FPSO “John Agyekum Kufuor”. After the final steps of commissioning of the offshore facilities, production will gradually flow via a dedicated 60km pipeline to the Onshore Receiving Facility (ORF) in Sanzule, where gas will then be compressed and distributed to Ghana’s national grid.

  • Exploration

Eni is present in Ghana in the upstream sector with the Integrated Oil & Gas Development Project, in the Offshore Cape Three Points block, with a 44.44% share. The OCTP project start-up was achieved in just two years and a half as well as three months earlier than scheduled and with a record time-to-market.

Our activities in Ghana are mainly concentrated in the Upstream sector.

  • Gas Advocacy

Eni is focused on continuous growth based on exploration and the creation of long-term value, for a future in which everyone can have efficient and sustainable access to energy. To this end, it has embarked on an energy transition towards a low-carbon future that gives natural gas a central role alongside the growing development of renewable sources. In fact, gas advocacy, along with the promotion of renewables, can help eliminate the use of more polluting fossil fuels, such as coal, which is responsible for more than 70% of CO₂ emissions in the electricity sector. As a demonstration of this commitment, gas accounts for 51% of Eni’s consolidated reserves.

  • Renewable Energies

The development of renewable energy in the countries in which Eni operates is a key element in the energy transition process towards a low-carbon scenario. Thanks to renewables, it is possible to integrate fossil sources in an environmentally, economically and socially sustainable way. Conscious that the obstacle to overcome is their competitiveness compared with traditional energy sources, Eni is investing in systems to increase efficiency and flexibility in order to multiply the possible applications. Research projects, carried out in collaboration with international centres of excellence, also through the scientific network linked to the Eni Award, are mainly focused on solar and biomass.

  • Offshore Cape Three Points

OCTP is an integrated offshore deepwater development project located approximately 60 km off the coast of the western region of Ghana, which includes volumes of oil in place of about 500 million barrels of oil and non-associated gas, or around 40 billion cubic metres that will be used entirely by the domestic market for the production of electrical energy. The project has launched production in just two and a half years, and three months ahead of schedule and will provide domestic gas supply to Ghana’s thermal power plants for more than 15 years. It is one of seven record-breaking projects from Eni, all of which are remarkable for their rapid approval rates and times to start-up.

  • Memorandum of understanding between Eni and UNDP

At the United Nations General Assembly on 24 September 2018, Eni signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with the aim of achieving its Sustainable Development Goals – and particularly its target for providing access to energy by 2030, actions to combat climate change and the protection, cleaning up and sustainable use of the global ecosystem. The partnership, which involves no financial commitments, is focused on the African continent, initially involving the countries in which we operate, such as Angola, the Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Mozambique and Nigeria. The commitment from the UNDP focuses on accelerating the positive impact of our company’s initiatives, including improving the regulatory framework, transferring technical skills, providing support for access to guarantee funds for investment in renewables and monitoring/certifying activities.
