Our strategy is based on the integration of exploration and development.
The strengthening of our Upstream business is one of the key elements of the new strategy that drives and inspires our operations. In order to improve our performance levels, we have succeeded in evolving our model and have successfully applied it to our projects around the world. What, then, is our new exploration strategy based on?

The magic formula is to prepare development analyses during exploration and use advanced technologies for analyses and drilling operations.

Staggering the set-up stage of the mining sites of deposits means cash flow can be anticipated. In Nooros, Egypt, for example, this took place over 13 months.

This means exploration for a full or future production in areas where installations are already in place. One example is in Indonesia, where the unit used for Jangkrik will be in operation again after the discovery of Merakes.

At Nené Marine, West and East Hub and OCTP, converting unused assets saved on development costs and sped up timescales.

The Zohr gas field off the Egyptian coast will start production in December 2017 – in record time. The highlights of one of the biggest gas discoveries of the past 20 years.
This is a new strategy aimed at generating liquid assets as soon as possible. The dual exploration model is based on the simple principle that, as hydrocarbons reserves increase, the benefits come from early monetisation achieved through the sale of minority stakes to other players. This is what happened, for example, with offshore companies based in Mozambique and the Zohr deposits in Egypt.
Thanks to advanced analysis and drilling technologies, we are able to integrate exploration and development. During exploration, for example, we carry out analyses to prepare for development, which comes before production.

Eni’s Upstream model is based on the strength of its exploration activities, which have also been responsible for creating the first drilling wells to develop deposits.

After the development stage is complete, production activities begin. Hydrocarbons are extracted from the deposit, treated in the installations and sent to market.

Eni's projects in the world. Let us tell you all about our adventures in the Upstream sector as we searched for deposits. We travelled to Angola for the West and East Hub; to Egypt for Zohr, the largest deposit in the Mediterranean Sea and Nooros, offshore in the Nile Delta; and to the Republic of Congo for the Nené Marine project. The journey continued in Indonesia with Jangkrik, quick as the cricket after which it is named; and ended in Norway with Goliat, where the harsh conditions did not stop us from achieving the maximum yield.
The largest deposit in the Mediterranean Sea – divided between Eni, BP and Rosneft – is in Egypt. It is testimony to the success of the dual exploration model.
In the offshore area of the Nile Delta we have reached 160,000 boe per day, which is then treated and sent to the national network.
Still in Africa, this time in the Republic of Congo, this project reached production within a year, well in advance of initial forecasts. It will produce more than 140,000 boe per day.
As quick as the cricket from which it takes its name, this project is Eni’s first asset in Indonesia. Production started only three-and-a-half years after receiving approval.
The most advanced technologies are used for ‘zero discharge’: harsh conditions but maximum yield.
West Hub and East Hub, Zohr, Nooros, OCTP, Nené Marine, Jangkrik: seven special projects linked by a common factor: extremely fast development and production. In deep waters or close to the coastline, together they contribute more than 15bn boe, confirming the value of Eni’s new approach.

Basilicata, Gela, Ravenna: deposits and centres to exploit resources.
Even data tells a story. Here are some of the results achieved in 2017 for our Upstream operations.
We also develop sustainability initiatives for local communities. Here is a list of projects together with analysis of the key 2016 data on exploration and production, performance levels and investments in the sector, as well as the 2017-2020 strategy.
