A long-term commitment to reducing our environmental impact.
Decarbonization plays an integral role throughout our strategy. We have reduced our direct upstream CO2 emissions by around 40 per cent since 2007, resulting in a global improvement in all our performance indicators. Our aim now is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. To do so we have increased our working efficiency, reducing direct CO2 emissions from our business and compensating for residual emissions with forestation projects.
At Eni, we recognise the need to act to fight climate change. We want to lead the energy transition by supporting the goals of the Paris Agreement. Reducing climate-altering gas emissions emissions, developing renewable sources and green business, and reaching a net zero carbon footprint for direct Upstream emissions by 2030 are just a few of our long-term objectives. Promoting a new energy paradigm is more than just a simple aim.

To be able to look forward to a sustainable future, a company has to be efficient not just from an economic point of view, but technically and environmentally. Eliminating waste and loss is a concrete goal that can be reached through new products and processes. It is a matter of renewing what has already been built in the past, adapting it to fit new demands.
The big challenge of tomorrow is to provide energy to a constantly growing world population at the same time as reducing CO2 emissions. To do that, we must all take the small, simple every-day actions that add up to make the change we want to see. We need innovative thinking that will drive growth for everyone.
What we do creates long-term value: projects and initiatives designed with a low-carbon future in mind.
Our commitment to the transition to a new energy paradigm is also based on using gas as a bridge to a future with lower emissions. Our tomorrow depends on financial solidity and social and environmental sustainability. This is why we are focusing on natural gas, a mix of gaseous hydrocarbons that has the smallest carbon footprint of any fossil fuel.
Our commitment to renewable energy complements traditional business in that we aim to extend the value chain and capitalise upon the synergies that exist among our various lines of business. It is on this basis that we have defined our business model for developing renewable energies, founded on our unique expertise and competitive advantages.
As a large energy company, we are fighting climate change not just through sustainable business and shared best practices, but also relationships with international organisations. We rely on research, green chemistry and renewable energies better to manage the main climate-change issues.
To progress towards a future where the environment is respected we are developing our first plant for producing energy from magnetic fusion, in collaboration with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This is a practically infinite energy source and extremely clean.
At Eni, we see the digital sphere as a useful lever for sustainable development that can accelerate economic growth while at the same time improving access to energy and promoting an environmentally-friendly approach. We need to consider our current position – in a world with a growing population and growing energy needs, where there are significant economic imbalances and differences between regions. In this respect, the digital sphere will allow us to meet the Sustainable Development Goals set out in the UN’s 2030 Agenda.
