Verdi's Falstaff on Exhibit at Palazzo Marino on December 8th

San Donato Milanese (Milan), 6 December, 2012 – Manuscripts acquired by Eni and IntesaSanpaolo at Sotheby's auction will be on display starting 8 December and throughout the holiday season in the area in front of the Cupid and Psyche exhibit in the Sala Alessi of Palazzo Marino. Visitors can admire early drafts of the composition of Falstaff, a telegram from Giuseppe Verdi to Arturo Toscanini about the successful performance of the work at La Scala in 1899, and the chorus score of Ave Maria from the Four Sacred Pieces that the composer titled, “Enigmatic Scale Harmonized for Four Voices".

The announcement of the purchase was made by Paolo Scaroni, CEO of Eni, and Giovanni Bazoli, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Intesa Sanpaolo, at Palazzo Marino during the press conference for the opening of the exhibition, Cupid and Psyche, which features the sculpture Amore e Psiche stanti by Antonio Canova, and the painting Psyché et l’Amour by François Gérard, organized by Eni in partnership with the Louvre Museum and the City of Milan.

The documents will be donated to the Museum of Teatro alla Scala, a place where the people of Milan can continue to admire them, and an ideal home for these extraordinarily rare manuscripts, especially since Verdi composed Falstaff while in Milan.
Milan is a city of great importance and interest for Eni, and thisdonation is part of the the company’s corporate strategy that aims to promote events in support of the Milan community and its needs.
