Flow batteries can store electricity in an economically sustainable way.
Organic Aqueous Flow Battery for Massive Electrical Energy Storage
Category: Energy frontiers
The biggest technical obstacle to getting most of our electricity from wind and solar power is their intermittent performance. By using massive amounts of battery power to store large amounts of electricity safely and cheaply, this problem can be resolved. Professors Aziz and Gordon have put organic molecules, made of abundant, inexpensive elements that can accumulate energy, inside water-based flow batteries. The capacity to chemically modify these molecules introduces a new series of possibilities and has given rise to organic, water-based flow batteries. These advances culminated in the creation of the first organic, water-based flow battery model, which satisfies all the technical demands for its creation, including the so-called calendar life (the lifespan of the battery, not taking into account the use it is put to).
This is Eni's international competition for applied energy research, launched in 2007 to find the best studies into efficiency, sustainability and environmental protection. Every year it involves the most important scientific institutions in the world and Eni's own laboratories.
