In an era of global pollution, due to rising population and energy demand, it is necessary to develop more efficient technologies to reduce atmospheric emissions. Matteo Monai's thesis, entitled “Nanostructured Materials for Environmental and Energy-Related Applications”, shows how nanostructured materials have different properties than their counterparts made in bulk. That means better catalytic services when monitoring emissions, synthesis of fuels production of H2 by photo-catalysis. By combining the elements of the periodic table in nano-alloys, we can produce selective, high-yield biofuels, all using cheaper metals like nickel and copper instead of platinum.
This is Eni's international competition for applied energy research, launched in 2007 to find the best studies into efficiency, sustainability and environmental protection. Every year it involves the most important scientific institutions in the world and Eni's own laboratories.
