Sustainable and environmentally friendly bio-based production of chemicals and materials is becoming increasingly important to address climate change. Professor Sang Yup LEE, author of the research “Environmentally-Friendly Bio-Based Production of Chemicals, Fuels And Materials” has pioneered and established “systems metabolic engineering” to efficiently develop microbial strains and bioprocesses for sustainable production of chemicals, fuels and materials. He developed many metabolically engineered bacteria capable of producing various chemicals including gasoline and advanced biofuel, industrially important chemicals, engineering plastic monomers, monoethylene glycol and terephthalic acid (used for manufacturing PET), among many chemicals. Also, he developed microbial strains and processes for the fermentative production of non-natural polymers including poly(lactate), poly(lactate-co-glycolate), and even aromatic polymers, all together providing sustainable platforms for the bio-based production of chemicals and materials.
Launched in 2007 to recognise the best studies on efficiency, sustainability and environmental protection, the annual Eni Award is an international prize for applied research in the field of energy. Every year the competition involves many of the most important scientific institutions in the world as well as Eni's own in-house laboratories.
