The use of fossil fuels as a source of energy has transformed our world and vastly improved our quality of life, however, it also impacts our environment. Today, we breathe almost double the amount of carbon dioxide compared the time before the industrial revolution. Prof. Omar M. Yaghi at the University of California, Berkeley, author of the research “Ultra-high Methane Storage, Carbon Dioxide Capture and Conversion, and Atmospheric Water Harvesting using Framework Materials” has established a new field; he termed Reticular Chemistry, leading to novel classes of crystalline, porous framework materials. These are metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with ultra-high porosity. They are capable of storing voluminous amounts of cleaner-burning methane for automobile fueling, capturing and storing of carbon dioxide, and harvesting water from desert air with only ambient sunlight as a source of energy.
Launched in 2007 to recognise the best studies on efficiency, sustainability and environmental protection, the annual Eni Award is an international prize for applied research in the field of energy. Every year the competition involves many of the most important scientific institutions in the world as well as Eni's own in-house laboratories.
