Eni Deutschland is a 100% subsidiary of the Italian oil company Eni, which was founded in 1926 as Agip (Azienda Generale Italiana Petroli) with the aim of securing the country’s energy supply and reducing Italy’s reliance on imports. After the end of World War II, company founder Enrico Mattei provided the crucial impetus to drive forward the exploration of hydrocarbons and the development of advanced technologies in this field, which eventually led to the founding of E.N.I. (Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi = National Hydrocarbon Agency) in 1953. Mattei therefore contributed significantly to the boom in the Italian oil industry.
On 25th February 1960 Eni Deutschland GmbH as we know it today started its business as Agip AG in Germany.
At that time, the first innovative filling stations were created in Italy offering customers no longer merely fuel to fill their tanks, but also numerous services and the opportunity to rest and take a relaxing break. This idea, which turned the concept of conventional filling stations on its head, came from the founder of Eni, Enrico Mattei, and quickly enjoyed massive success. Mattei commissioned renowned architects, including Mario Baciocchi, to design the new filling stations.
Mattei also dreamed of “crossing the Alps”, and his aim was to also supply crude oil via the Italian supply system of the Po Valley to refineries in Switzerland (through the Oléduc du Rhône pipeline), Austria and Germany (via the CEL and TAL pipelines), and to build a distribution network that would reflect the then existing model in Italy.
Bavaria’s demand for energy also increased significantly during this time and Enrico Mattei decided the foundation of Agip Deutschland, thus providing the impetus for the construction of the first refinery in Bavaria, more precisely in Ingolstadt (ERIAG). The then Bavarian Minister of Economic Affairs, Dr. Otto Schedl, supported Eni’s initiative as he clearly recognised the need for the long-term industrial and economic development of the whole region.
With the subsequent construction of the CEL pipeline and the Transalpine oil pipeline, the Eni Group made another important contribution to the development of important infrastructures, which guaranteed Bavaria's competitiveness in terms of energy supply and industrial development over the following decades.
This was followed by a rapid expansion of the network of Agip service stations, the heating oil sector and the sale of additional products in Germany.
After the German reunification in 1990, Agip Deutschland was committed to creating an efficient distribution network in the new Federal Lands, and the first Agip service station in East Germany was opened already in 1990. Agip later acquired an indirect shareholding in the refinery in Schwedt/Oder to ensure the supply of the service station network in the new Federal Lands.
Bayernoil, in which Eni Deutschland still has a 20% share, was founded in 1998 in the course of the construction of the connecting pipelines and the expansion of ERIAG Ingolstadt by two further refineries which had been established in the meantime by different operators in Bavaria (in Neustadt and in Vohburg).
During a restructuring of the Eni Group in 2003, the legal form of Agip Deutschland AG (a public limited company) was converted into a GmbH (limited liability company).
The following years were marked by the company’s increasing commitment to sustainable development and technological progress. 2006 was a decisive year when the first Agip multi-energy station, which now sold both liquefied and gas hydrogen, was opened in the Infraserv Höchst Industrial Park near Frankfurt am Main as part of the EU project "Zero Regio".
In 2010, the year of its 50th anniversary, the company was finally renamed Eni Deutschland GmbH as a statement of its strong identification with the Eni Group.
Today, the company is one of the leading mineral oil companies in Germany and, with its famous six-legged dog brand, stands for quality products, excellent customer service, long-term partnerships and technological advance. Eni Deutschland is committed to sustainable, future-oriented development, giving a high priority in particular to occupational safety and the health of its employees, partners and customers.
