Our work in South Africa

We operated in the country until 2022, where we were present in the Upstream sector and, originally, in the distribution of lubricants through Agip.

How our work grew in the country

In 1973, the Agip Lubrificants Pty company was founded, which distributed lubricants and, at the same time, the first offshore oil research activities in the country also began. In 2011, we signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the South African PetroSa state company as Eni and in 2014, we resumed exploration activities in South Africa through Eni South Africa BV. In February 2022 Eni has completed the transfer of its entire participating interest in the Exploration Right permit 236 (ER236) to its partner Sasol Limited, and is exiting the Upstream business in South Africa. Eni acquired the exploration rights in November 2013 and in December 2014 became the operator of the block, located offshore KwaZulu-Natal. During the relevant exploration periods Eni fulfilled its obligations by complying with all the work commitments.
