Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Leymah Gbowee

This year's Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Leymah Gbowee, the organiser of a protest movement that has involved thousands of Christian and Muslim women and which was able to convince the then president of Liberia Charles Taylor to meet a group of rebels around the negotiating table in Ghana, meetings that led to the signing of a peace agreement.

Leymah Gbowee is the co-founder and member of the Council for Dignity, Forgiveness, Justice and Reconciliation set up in Rome on 21 April 2010 during the meeting of the Iniziativa Ara Pacis of which Eni is a partner.

In that context, some of the most effective and able peace operators from a range of religious, ethnic and national groups, mainly from regions in conflict, committed themselves to sharing and exchanging approaches, intuitions and methods in support of their efforts to attract the attention of governments and legislators to the importance of dealing with the human dimension of peace in the prevention and transformation of conflicts and, more generally, to forge new ways of shifting humanity towards a political culture of dignity, forgiveness and reconciliation.
