The UN Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC)
With the aim of making the Convention as operational as possible, the International Chambre of Commerce (ICC), the Global Compact, the World Economic Forum Partnering Against Corruption Initiative (PACI) and Transparency International gave their support to an initiative which aims to promote the adoption of an implementation and revision mechanism of the Convention to mark the conference of the signed-up countries held in Doha (Qatar) in November 2009.
The initiative was launched with a letter addressed to the Secretary General of the United Nations signed by the chief executives of 24 companies, including Eni. The interested companies support the initiative and request the inclusion of the companies name among the signatories, specifying the nature of their business and the name of the chief executive. The adhesion of Eni (which took place last October) followed the abovementioned ratification by the Italian government and once again confirms the company’s interest in playing an increasingly incisive role in promoting transparency and in fighting corruption.
Caring for Climate: The Business Leadership Platform
In June 2007 Eni signed up to “Caring for Climate: The Business Leadership Platform‘, an initiative promoted by the Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for the fight against climate change. During the Global Compact Leaders Summit of 2007, the directors of the Global Compact, UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) and the WBCSD (World Business Council on Sustainable Development), asked companies engaged in the Global Compact to sign a declaration in which they affirm their commitment to fighting climate change. Eni, as one of the signatories, participated in the first meeting of the Signatories held in Geneva in October 2008. With the aim of stimulating dialogue, the meeting brought together representatives of the United Nations, the private sector and research specialist engaged in drawing up a post-Kyoto strategy.
The 60th Anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights
To mark the 60th Anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights, the Director of the Global Compact and the High Commissioner for Human Rights invited the chief executives of the participating companies to sign a declaration reaffirming their commitment to supporting human rights in their respective spheres of influence, a declaration that was published in the Financial Times on 10 December 2008 and included the list of the companies and their CEOs.
By adhering to the declaration, Eni took the opportunity to see its commitment to human rights publicly recognised and, at the same time, to maintain a position in line with its reputation in the context of the Global Compact.
