Protecting biodiversity involves all the operational areas where Eni operates from the Exploration and Production sector, where it is necessary above all to preserve the species and habitat of the ecosystems found in the areas in question, to refining, petrochemical and transport activities, where the main aim is the sustainable use of resources and the restoration of the natural environment.
Eni is involved in projects, in partnership with international NGOs and research institutes, that are aimed at protecting the biodiversity in environmental contexts, both on land and in the sea, that are particularly sensitive.
The results of these study projects, which are carried out in accordance with the Energy Biodiversity Initiative have been assimilated into specific Eni operational standards and into assessments of environmental and social impact (ESIA).
As far as biodiversity protection technology is concerned, Eni has developed specific technology for laying and subsequently burying pipelines in shallow water which avoids the use of equipment with a strong environmental impact and of excavating and dredging large volumes of earth.
