The capture and sequestration of CO2 associated with industrial processes such as refining is extremely important in the area dedicated to research into technology for reducing emissions of GHG. Eni is currently involved in using its oil exploration and refining technology for research and experiments into projects aimed at the sequestration and biofixation of CO2.
At the present time, Carbon Capture & Storage projects are based on analysing the capacity for storing and permanently retaining CO2 in geological sites, given that chemical and structural modifications must guarantee the safe storage of the gas. Eni is also engaged in studying methods of separating CO2 from combustion gas.
The biofixation of CO2 is one of the most interesting technologies for containing climate-altering emissions. Eni is currently developing a project aimed at verifying the techno-economic feasibility of biofixation processes of the CO2 produced in refineries using micro-algae that is able to assimilate it and, at the same time, purify refluent water.
