Iso-Octane is the last born of the clean fuels family. It is a synthetic hydrocarbon, however already existing in the gasolines and in the composition of alkylates. Iso-octane is particularly useful in the formulation of gasolines containing ethanol in direct blending, for example in those produced in the United States, thanks to its extremely low volatility that counterbalances the very high volatility of ethanol. Iso-octane has also an high octane number and does not contain any aromatics, metals and sulphur. The worldwide iso-octane market in 2008 is estimated approx. 1.0 million tons, entirely consumed in the U.S.
