From January 1, 2002, in the European Union countries, only unleaded petrol may be sold and, therefore, from that date the petrol on the European market is distinguishable only by the octane number.
The EN 228 standard, in force in Italy as UNI EN 228, is the European specification for premium unleaded petrol (called Euro Super) which has an octane number of 95 and must be available in all European Union countries. The characteristics of the petrol which have an environmental impact (e.g. sulphur content) were defined by the European Directive 2003/17/CE.
Alongside the Euro Super, in the majority of European countries, a Superplus with 98 octane is available, while in some countries, such as Germany and Austria, a regular petrol (91-92 octane) is available.
