Bitumens, commonly obtained from oil refinery processes, are at ambient temperature solid materials, from black to dark brown in colour, with thermoplastic behaviour and good characteristics of adhesion and waterproofing.
The production processes used are mainly fractional distillation, production for de-asphalting with solvent in lubricant cycle refineries, thermal treatment of residuals.
From a chemical-physical view point, bitumens are complex mixtures consisting of hydrocarbons and other organic compounds containing different atoms besides carbon, such sulphur, nitrogen, oxygen. Through fractionation processes it is possible to identify some chemical homogenous fractions with a specific characteristics, to which ascribe certain properties of bitumen:
Bitumens were the first oil product used by man thanks to its high adhesive and waterproofing power. Bitumens, in fact, are used as powerful binders, endowed with adhesive and cohesive characteristics; in addition to high impermeability, they offer the ability to resist the majority of acids, alkali and salts, while solid at ambient temperature they are used for heating and emulsifying with water and when necessary can be recycled.
Thanks to this property, they are widely used materials in the building and maintenance of road pavement and in a wide variety of industrial applications where waterproofing and adhesion characteristics are requested. First among these is the preparation of waterproof membranes.
In the last years a real breakthrough in the road applications, has been seen, really with the affirmation of the polymer modified bitumen. By polymer modified bitumen, it is meant a bituminous binder obtained from carefully selected bituminous binders whose rheological properties are "modified" by processing in a special plant, with the addition of suitable polymers in order to increase its performance. The eni modified technology called Agip Eliflex, is based on use of branched Styrene Butadiene Styrene block copolymer, that, overcoming the main difficulties in the compatibility process, offers the best performance.
A further technological development has been affirmed: the use of binders for warm applications and for recycling. The eni products called AGIP RIGEBIT are special binders obtained through a process in a specific plant, starting with select bituminous bases, modified with polymers and enriched with suitable additives. The special formulation adopted in their preparation provides superior characteristics jointed to an adequate viscosity, in order to facilitate its application and compaction at operating temperatures lower than those commonly used for traditional hot conglomerates, whit energy saving and possibility of recycling.
