Paolo Scaroni has had the most active year of any of the big western oil company chiefs. Eni has been on an acquisition spree, investing in assets from the Gulf of Mexico to Russia, and buying Burren Energy, a UK-listed oil independent active in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Turkmenistan.
