The areas accessible to western companies have in many cases border-like characteristics in environmental, geographical and geological terms: technology is the only tool that can make these areas available at sustainable prices and with minimal environmental impact.
The potentiality to extract hydrocarbons is very high in areas with extreme environmental conditions and/or geological characteristics.
For example, the oil and natural gas resources potentially existing but yet undiscovered in deep and ultra-deep waters are approximately 200 billion barrels – about 10% of the resources still believed possible to be extracted on a world basis. However, this assessment might be strongly underestimated because exploration in ultra-deep sea is quite recent and of marginal importance.
As a matter of fact, Arctic and sub-Arctic areas are the vastest parts of our globe that haven’t been explored yet – due to lack of adequate technology – and might hold up to 20% of the world’s yet-to be found resources of hydrocarbons.
