Only a change of pace in research can offer the world the availability of considerable amounts of energy deriving from renewable sources at affordable prices. It is fundamental to invest in this field in order to answer in due time to a future where the role of fossil fuels will have to be limited.
Renewable energy sources provide little contribution to the world energy offer - 3% excluding biomass and wastes. This is due to the fact that the technologies presently available only allow for limited production of energy at high prices. For example, solar energy satisfies less than 1% of global energy needs and the production cost of energy from photovoltaic plants is 5 to 10 times higher than the one in gas or oil-fueled plants. The availability of innovative technologies for the exploitation of alternative energy sources will provide a fundamental answer to the need of a world that asks for increasing energy, but cannot afford it unless it is clean.
