Servizi Fondo Bombole Metano was established in 1999 by the sale of the business activity conducted by Eni Corporate in Rome.

The company provides technical, administrative and accounting support for the Fondo Bombole Metano committee that transmits all the management costs through the
Gestione Fondo Bombole Metano.

The Fondo Bombole Metano committee is institutionally responsible for ensuring the safety and effective management of tanks used in transport.

The Technical Activities of SFBM: at the plant

Law n. 640 of 8 July 1950 and its relative regulations for implementation governs the circulation and use of tanks for methane gas and created the Fondo Bombole Metano to meet the costs of providing the service in the public interest.

It is administered by a committee made up of representatives from the Economic Development, Economy and Finance and Infrastructure and Transport Ministries, producers of methane gas, owners of tanks for methane gas, distributors and transporters of methane gas and 2 representatives from Eni.

The committee has a guidance and control function to ensure optimum levels of safety and use of methane gas tanks used in transport.

The committee is not considered to have a legal personality, but has patrimonial autonomy and therefore conducts the necessary accounting for the fulfilment of its institutional role.

The committee administers the fund that maintains separate accounts from those of the SFBM, which are outlined in a specific report compiled by the committee and submitted to the competent ministerial authorities.

Management control is carried out by a specially created board of statutory auditors that, under the terms of the law, plays a role analogous to that of the statutory auditors of any public company.

Under the terms of the law, all users who have chosen methane as a fuel for transport pay a duty related to the methane supplied: such duties are diverted to the Fondo Gestione Bombole Metano, which is managed by a committee nominated by the minister of Productive Activities, in concert with the Economy and Finance minister.

  • 8 July 1950:
    the creation of the Fondo Bombole Metano.
  • 8 August 1992:
    Law n. 359 transformed Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi into the public company Eni SpA and with Law n.333 of 11 July 1993 the activities that were reserved for the public body were transferred, under the form of a licence to the company.
  • 5 January 1998:
    the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Crafts, in agreement with the Ministry for the Treasury, Budget and Economic Planning and the Ministry of Finance produced a decree giving Eni SpA the licence to manage the activities of the Fondo Bombole Metano, for a period of twenty years, and authorising Eni SpA to conduct such activities through a subsidiary.

SFBM SpA oversees the obligatory maintenance and servicing tanks used for the storage of methane fuel in vehicles registered in Italy. It checks the structural condition of tanks to determine compliance with safety regulations, thereby providing a technical and administrative public service established by Law n. 640 of 8.7.1950 n.640 and modified by Law n. 145 of 7..6.1990.
