MultimediaIn 1955 Enrico Mattei entrusted the poet Attilio Bertolucci with the task of setting up an Eni company magazine, Il Gatto Selvatico. The result of this project is an elegant, refined monthly that at the same time is also accessible to non-expert readers. From the very beginning, the pages of the monthly included stories and work from important writers of the calibre of Anna Banti, Giuseppe Berto, Giovanni Comisso, Giuseppe Dessì, Carlo Emilio Gadda, Natalia Ginzburg, Raffaele La Capria, Gianna Manzini, Goffredo Parise and Leonardo Sciascia who wrote original short stories that in most cases had never been published anywhere else and which were often illustrated by the talent of Mino Maccari. These stories represent an important cultural heritage, an unknown deposit that Eni has decided to explore and present to the public.
Nowadays, the Festivaletteratura di Mantova is one of the most popular cultural events in the country, a festival of cultural entertainment encapsulated in five days of talks given by authors, readings, shows and concerts. For many years now it has represented an unmissable appointment both for those who love literature and for those who are simply curious and know that it is an opportunity to meet writers, musicians and actors in the town's streets and squares.

Thursday 4, 21.30, Piazza Castello: Scott Turow with Irene Bignardi
“A lawyer’s job is similar to that of a writer: listen to many people and gather everything together into something coherent and universal. After all, a lawyer who thinks that it isn’t important to speak to everyone is sure to lose the case‘. Scott Thurow continues to practice being a lawyer even after the worldwide success of his books. Many people see him as the inventor of the legal thriller, and all of his books (including “Presumed Innocent‘ and “The Burden of Proof‘) are based in the American legal world. He will be interviewed by the journalist Irene Bignardi.
Saturday 6, 15.00, Teatro Bibiena: Margherita Oggero and Raffaella Romagnolo with Massimo Cirri
In Italy thrillers are also tinged with pink, not because they are particularly concerned with romance but because the cases are solved (and written) by more women than we might at first think. An example of this is the “prof‘, the hero of Margherita Oggero’s novels (including “La Collega Tatuata‘ and “L’amica Americana), a literature teacher who can’t keep away from mystery cases, while on the other hand Raffaella Romagnolo chose a man (the police captain De Luigi) as the main character in her “L’amante di Città‘. The two authors talk with Massimo Cirri.
Saturday 6, 21.00, Cortile della Cavallerizza: Carlo Lucarelli with Piero Dorfles
“Writers often base their work on the work done by historians, although what we generally do differently is to reveal the mechanisms‘. In his books Carlo Lucarelli has always shown his great passion for history, especially for our country’s recent history, and in his latest book, “L’ottava Vibrazione‘, this passion finally takes the form of an historical novel. He will be interviewed by the journalist Piero Dorfles.
Sunday 7, 10.30, Palazzo D’Arco: Maj Sjöwall with Paolo Zaccagnini
Between 1965 and 1975 Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö wrote a series of thrillers collected together under the sub-title of “Romance of a Crime‘ and featuring Martin Beck, a policeman who is tortured by an ulcer that is aggravated by the unease he feels at living in modern Sweden. Looked at from the perspective of Henning Mankell and even Andrea Camilleri, Sjöwall’s books are written in a classic vein that shows a broad understanding of literature without indulging in sensationalism or gratuitous dramatic twists. Sjöwall will be interviewed by the journalist Paolo Zaccagnini.
