Since the early 1990s the theatre’s operatic activities have involved Claudio Abbado, who has overseen some of the most important productions in Ferrara in recent years: from Ronconi’s staging of Rossini’s Viaggio a Reims, and the Mozart trilogy The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte, to the Verdi masterpieces Falstaff and Simon Boccanegra. In addition to the great repertoire from the 18th and 19th centuries, which has also featured lesser-known works that are more rarely performed in Italy, a number of demanding productions of contemporary opera have been staged (Divara by Azio Corghi, Le Grand Macabre by Gyorgy Ligeti, Prova d’orchestra by Giorgio Battistelli, and The Death of Klinghoffer by John Adams).
